Nigeria’s entertainment industry and academic community are mourning the passing of renowned actor, theatre practitioner and scholar, Professor Adekola Akangbe Gabriel Oyewo, popularly known as Kola Oyewo.
The respected thespian died at the age of 80, leaving behind a legacy spanning decades of contributions to the performing arts and education.
The announcement of his death was made on Friday by his son, Adetoyese Oyewo, in a heartfelt message shared on social media. In the tribute, he described his father as a man whose life embodied wisdom, compassion, resilience and generosity.
Expressing the family’s grief, Adetoyese said they were saddened by the loss but remained thankful for the remarkable life Professor Oyewo lived and the countless lives he touched throughout his career.

He noted that the late actor’s influence would continue to resonate through the memories and experiences of family members, friends, colleagues, students and admirers who benefited from his knowledge and mentorship.
The family also appealed for prayers and support during the period of mourning as they celebrate a life devoted to scholarship, culture and the advancement of the arts.
Professor Oyewo was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s foremost figures in theatre and performing arts. Beyond his accomplishments as an actor, he earned distinction as an academic who played a significant role in nurturing future generations of theatre practitioners.
Throughout his career, he made substantial contributions to the preservation and development of Yoruba theatre while promoting Nigerian culture through stage productions, film appearances, teaching and cultural advocacy.

His enduring impact on the creative and educational sectors established him as a respected voice in Nigeria’s artistic landscape, with a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.
