Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo has stressed that the benefits of democracy cannot be fully realised by citizens living under the constant threat of insecurity, stating that peace and safety remain fundamental to democratic governance.
In a Democracy Day message issued on Friday in Benin City, the governor said the protection of lives and property, access to justice, and public security are among the most important dividends that democratic systems must deliver.
Okpebholo noted that while Nigeria continues to celebrate its democratic journey, the country must confront pressing challenges such as insecurity, economic hardship and declining public confidence in institutions. He urged citizens to remain united and committed to strengthening democratic values and structures.
Reflecting on the significance of the June 12, 1993 presidential election and the sacrifices of late Chief M.K.O. Abiola alongside other pro-democracy activists, the governor said the lessons from that era remain relevant to Nigeria’s current realities.

According to him, democracy is an ongoing process that requires active participation from both leaders and citizens. He argued that no democratic system can flourish where people live in fear of kidnapping, armed robbery, cult-related violence and other criminal activities.
Okpebholo maintained that security serves as the foundation for economic growth, social stability and national development, emphasising that democratic freedoms lose their value when citizens are unable to live and work in safety.
He expressed confidence that Nigeria possesses the resilience and capacity to overcome its present challenges, citing the nation’s history of overcoming difficult periods through unity, determination and collective effort.
The governor also called on political leaders, public officials and citizens to uphold transparency, accountability and respect for the rule of law. He warned against divisive politics, misinformation and actions capable of weakening democratic institutions.
As the country looks ahead to future elections, Okpebholo encouraged Nigerians to embrace peaceful political participation and issue-driven campaigns, noting that democracy thrives when leaders remain accountable and citizens engage responsibly in the political process.

Highlighting efforts by his administration to improve security in Edo State, the governor said the government has strengthened collaboration with security agencies, expanded community intelligence networks and intensified actions against kidnapping and cultism.
He further pointed to initiatives under the SHINE Agenda, including investments in healthcare through the Edo Health Insurance Scheme (EdoHIS), infrastructure rehabilitation, educational development, youth empowerment and economic growth programmes designed to improve residents’ quality of life.
Okpebholo congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of Democracy Day and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting good governance, sustainable development and. a safer environment for all residents of Edo State.
