The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has given a detailed account of the circumstances surrounding the death of a suspected cyber fraudster, Asar Michael Sesugh, in Makurdi, Benue State, insisting that he did not die in custody.
According to the Commission, the incident followed the arrest of 26 suspected internet fraudsters on April 28, 2026, who were detained under a magistrate’s court remand order for further investigation.

EFCC said that on May 4, three of the suspects escaped from its holding facility after requesting to use the lavatory and allegedly breaking through the toilet roof. Efforts to re-arrest them, it added, were initially unsuccessful.
The Commission explained that fresh intelligence later indicated that one of the escapees, Sesugh, was sighted in the Kansho area of Makurdi on May 21. Operatives reportedly moved to the location, where he and suspected associates allegedly engaged them in a gunfire exchange.
According to the EFCC, the suspect fled the scene after the confrontation but was later found critically injured by the roadside and taken to the Police Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The agency said the case has been reported to the Benue State Police Command, which has begun investigations into the incident and is pursuing other fleeing suspects.

EFCC stressed that the deceased was neither in custody nor on bail at the time of his death, while expressing condolences to his family and reaffirming its commitment to internal security and law enforcement operations.
