Israel and Hezbollah continued exchanging attacks on Tuesday, even as U.S. President Donald Trump announced efforts to broker a de-escalation agreement and prevent further escalation in Lebanon.
The renewed violence followed reports of overnight exchanges between the Israeli military and Hezbollah fighters, despite claims from Washington that both sides had agreed to pause hostilities under a U.S.-backed understanding.
President Trump had earlier stated that he held discussions with both parties and secured a commitment to halt fighting, adding that Israel would not carry out planned strikes on Beirut. He also said that any military deployments heading toward the Lebanese capital had been halted.
The Lebanese Embassy in Washington reportedly said Hezbollah had accepted terms of a proposed “mutual cessation of attacks,” which would also restrict Israeli operations in Beirut. The announcement initially raised hopes of a temporary cooling of tensions in the region.
However, hostilities resumed shortly after, with the Lebanese Civil Defence reporting fatalities and infrastructure damage from Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon, including in the village of Marwaniyeh. Emergency officials also reported damage to a rescue centre in Nabatieh following an airstrike, while Lebanese military sources confirmed that soldiers were injured in a separate drone-related incident.
The Israeli military said it had carried out strikes targeting Hezbollah infrastructure in southern Lebanon, while also reporting the interception of projectiles launched from Lebanese territory into Israel. Sirens were also activated in northern Israel following what authorities described as a suspicious aerial target.
The latest escalation comes amid heightened regional tensions, with Israel intensifying its military operations in Lebanon and Hezbollah continuing cross-border attacks. The situation has raised fears of a broader regional conflict involving Iran, which has expressed concern over the ongoing violence.
Iranian officials had warned that continued Israeli strikes in Lebanon could force them to reconsider ongoing diplomatic negotiations with the United States. Reports from Tehran indicated that elements of the negotiation process may be suspended if the conflict persists.
President Trump said he had also spoken with Hezbollah representatives, claiming both sides had agreed to halt hostilities. However, the renewed exchange of fire on the ground has cast doubt on the effectiveness of the proposed ceasefire arrangement.
The U.S. president also confirmed ongoing diplomatic engagement with Iran, noting that discussions were continuing at a rapid pace despite recent tensions. He added that while Iran had not formally communicated any suspension of talks, he viewed continued negotiations as possible.
Meanwhile, Israeli officials maintained that military operations would continue in response to perceived threats from Hezbollah, particularly in southern Lebanon and surrounding areas.
As fighting continues despite diplomatic intervention, concerns remain high over the fragility of ceasefire efforts and the potential for wider regional escalation involving multiple actors in the Middle East.
