Nigerian medical experts have raised concerns over the potential spread of Ebola into the country, urging the Federal Government to urgently strengthen border surveillance and activate emergency response systems amid outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
The Academy of Medical Sciences, Nigeria, warned that increased regional travel, trade and population movement across Africa could expose Nigeria to cross-border transmission of the deadly virus. The body stressed that Nigeria’s success in containing the 2014 Ebola outbreak should not lead to complacency.

The scientists called for tighter screening measures at airports, seaports and land borders, including temperature checks, travel-history assessments, digital monitoring systems and emergency isolation facilities for travellers arriving from affected regions.
They also urged authorities to immediately activate the National Ebola Incident Management System involving the Federal Ministry of Health, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Port Health Services and state governments.
Health institutions nationwide were advised to reactivate isolation centres, strengthen rapid response structures and ensure adequate supplies of personal protective equipment for frontline workers.
The experts warned that Ebola remains a highly dangerous viral disease capable of causing major health, economic and social disruption if preventive measures are delayed.
