Fresh details have emerged surrounding a series of deadly shootings in Benin City involving a 200-level student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), his alleged girlfriend and other victims, in incidents reportedly linked to a disputed N90 million fraud deal.

The Edo State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the attacks, which occurred on Sunday evening shortly after the university’s semester examinations.

One of the victims, identified as Alexander Omogiate, a 200-level Political Science student of UNIBEN, was reportedly shot multiple times at close range by masked gunmen while inside his Mercedes-Benz vehicle near the university’s main gate.

Three other occupants of the vehicle identified as Onwuke Blessed, Chinenye Christian Mbagwu and Dorothy Ubah, sustained gunshot injuries after being hit by stray bullets during the attack and were rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for treatment.

Dorothy Ubah was later confirmed dead on Monday as a result of injuries sustained in the shooting.

Reports further indicate that a second victim, said to be Omogiate’s girlfriend, was also killed in a separate attack along the Airport Road axis by suspected members of the same armed group a few hours after the UNIBEN incident.

Another unidentified person was reportedly killed in the Uselu area during the violence.

Although police authorities are yet to officially confirm the motive behind the killings, sources linked the attacks to an alleged dispute over the sharing of proceeds from a purported N90 million internet fraud operation.

According to a source familiar with the matter, tension had reportedly been building for weeks after some individuals accused the deceased student of withholding funds allegedly meant to be shared among members of the group.

The source claimed that the disagreement escalated into confrontations involving dangerous weapons before the fatal shootings.

It was further alleged that on the final day of examinations, the deceased student was trailed from campus to the university’s main gate where the gunmen opened fire on his vehicle before fleeing the scene.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of UNIBEN’s Anti-Cult Committee, Venerable Egbenusi, has reportedly resigned following the incident.

In a statement circulating online, Egbenusi alleged that the university’s Vice Chancellor pressured him to delete video recordings allegedly showing cult-related activities before the shootings.

He claimed that he had forwarded the video clips to the Vice Chancellor before and after the attack but was later instructed to erase the materials.

According to him, he declined to comply, insisting that the footage constituted important evidence for investigation.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the management of the University of Benin nor the Edo State Police Command had issued an official statement on the allegations or the incidents.
