In a significant push to reform police education in Nigeria, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Monday convened a high-level strategic meeting with key education stakeholders to advance plans for a new Nigeria Police Academy campus in Ogun State and the comprehensive upgrade of police training institutions across the country.

The meeting, held at the Federal Ministry of Education, was hosted by the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, alongside the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Said Ahmad. Also in attendance was former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun (Rtd), underscoring the national importance attached to the initiative.

At the centre of discussions was the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Ogun State, expected to commence academic activities in the 2026 session. The initiative forms part of a broader reform agenda aimed at strengthening training capacity and modernising the curriculum of police institutions nationwide.

Stakeholders also reviewed plans to upgrade the 42 police colleges across Nigeria, with a focus on infrastructure development, improved security, and achieving full academic accreditation. The reforms are being pursued in collaboration with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund to facilitate the construction of modern learning facilities.

In addition, coordination is underway with the National Universities Commission to conduct resource verification processes required for accreditation, ensuring that the institutions meet national academic standards.

Speaking at the meeting, IGP Disu reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to professionalism and capacity building, noting that the transformation of training institutions is critical to developing a modern, service-oriented police force.

He emphasised that integrating academic excellence with tactical and operational training would equip officers with the competence and integrity needed to effectively address evolving security challenges.
