The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has strongly condemned the alleged extrajudicial killing of a suspect by police officers in Delta State, describing the act as unconstitutional, unlawful, and a grave violation of human rights.
In a statement signed by its President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, the association expressed deep concern over a viral video showing the incident, noting that it reflects a disturbing abuse of power by law enforcement officers. The NBA stated that such actions portray the Nigerian Police Force in a negative light and reinforce longstanding allegations of rights violations against suspects and even innocent citizens.
“The NBA unequivocally condemns this act. No officer of the law, regardless of rank or circumstance, has the right to act as prosecutor, judge, and executioner,” the statement read.

The association stressed that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees the presumption of innocence and the right to life and dignity, warning that continued disregard for these principles could erode public confidence in the justice system.
Describing the incident as a direct assault on the rule of law, the NBA said the act, reportedly carried out in public view, highlights a troubling pattern of misconduct among some security personnel.
While commending the police authorities for arresting the principal suspect involved, the NBA insisted that accountability must not stop there. It noted that other officers seen in the video may have aided or abetted the act and should also be investigated and prosecuted.
“The investigation, arrest and prosecution process must extend to any other officer who may have counselled, aided or abetted the extrajudicial killing, as they will be jointly liable,” the statement added.
The NBA called for a transparent and speedy prosecution, warning that any attempt to shield those responsible would further undermine trust in law enforcement institutions.
To ensure justice is served, the association directed its Human Rights Committees in Warri, Effurun, and Udu to monitor the case closely. It also tasked its national Human Rights and Civil Liberties Committees with tracking similar allegations across the country and engaging relevant authorities.
Reiterating its stance, the NBA urged authorities to take decisive action against misconduct within the police force, stressing that erring officers must be removed to preserve the integrity of the institution.

The association also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring them of its commitment to seeking justice.
“This incident once again underscores the urgent need for comprehensive police reform, particularly in the areas of accountability, use of force, and respect for human rights,” the statement concluded.
