Nigeria’s national wrestling team has departed Abuja with a clear objective to extend its dominance on the continent and secure a historic 15th women’s title at the 2026 African Wrestling Championships in Alexandria, Egypt.
The delegation, led by Nigeria Wrestling Federation President, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, left the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Tuesday, April 28, brimming with confidence ahead of the continental showdown scheduled from April 27 to May 2.
Nigeria will compete across U-17, U-20, and Senior categories, fielding a balanced squad of 18 wrestlers 10 women and 8 men across multiple weight divisions.
The spotlight, however, remains firmly on the women’s team, which has established itself as a continental powerhouse with 14 African titles a record unmatched in Nigerian sport.
A 15th crown in Alexandria would further cement Nigeria’s legacy as Africa’s dominant wrestling nation.
Addressing the athletes before departure, Adeniyi praised the team’s preparation and urged them to carry their discipline into competition.

“I want to appreciate your discipline and dedication in camp. That same spirit must be taken to Egypt,” he said.
“We are the current women’s champions. We must do everything possible to bring the title home for the 15th time.”
The Nigerian squad combines seasoned performers with emerging talents. Among the standout figures is multiple-time African champion Mercy Adekuoroye, alongside Olympic medalist Blessing Oborududu, who is part of the coaching crew.
From Genesis Miesinnei (50kg) to Harrison Onovwiomogbhwo (97kg), the athletes are expected to compete fiercely across all divisions.
Adeniyi emphasised the responsibility that comes with representing the country on the continental stage.
“You are ambassadors of this country. Believe in yourselves, stay disciplined, and make Nigeria proud.”
