The Lagos State Police Command has identified Inspector Osumah Frank as the officer seen in a viral video making political and ethnic remarks while travelling in a commercial vehicle.
The command said disciplinary proceedings had commenced against the inspector in accordance with established regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the command distanced itself from the officer’s comments, describing them as inappropriate.
The police said Frank made the remarks in his personal capacity and stressed that they did not represent the position, views or official disposition of the Lagos State Police Command or the Nigeria Police Force.
Frank was filmed wearing a police uniform while travelling in a commercial vehicle when he made the remarks that subsequently circulated widely on social media.
The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, CP Tijani Fatai, reiterated that police personnel were expected to maintain professionalism, civility, discipline and respect for members of the public at all times.
“Wearing the Police uniform comes with the responsibility to uphold the dignity and integrity of the Force,” the command said.
It added that conduct capable of bringing the Force into disrepute or undermining public confidence would not be tolerated.
The command said the disciplinary process would be conducted in accordance with existing police regulations.
It reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and professional policing, stressing that officers were expected to conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the responsibilities attached to their positions.
