Former Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s decision to install a solar power system at the Presidential Villa, arguing that the move reflects a loss of confidence in Nigeria’s electricity sector.

Speaking during an interview shared on his official Facebook page on Saturday, Melaye alleged that the President’s adoption of an independent power solution for Aso Rock suggests he has abandoned his commitment to improving electricity supply across the country.

The former lawmaker described the reported N17 billion solar project as insensitive, maintaining that the government should prioritise addressing the power challenges affecting ordinary Nigerians before investing heavily in alternative energy for the seat of government.

According to Melaye, the decision sends the wrong message at a time when millions of Nigerians continue to struggle with unreliable electricity.

“The President has chosen to leave Nigerians in darkness while spending N17 billion on a solar power system for the Presidential Villa,” he said.

He argued that moving the Villa off the national grid indicates a lack of faith in the government’s ability to deliver stable electricity to citizens.

“When the President says he is off the national grid, it suggests he has given up on fixing the power sector,” Melaye stated.

The former senator further stressed that leadership should be demonstrated through actions that directly improve the welfare of the people.

“Leadership is about setting an example. It is difficult to justify providing uninterrupted power at the Villa while ordinary Nigerians, including farmers and rural dwellers, continue to rely on candles and other alternatives,” he added.

Melaye accused the administration of being disconnected from the daily realities faced by many Nigerians due to persistent power shortages.
