A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Sowunmi, has argued that Nigeria’s complex challenges cannot realistically be resolved within a single presidential term.

Sowunmi made the remarks during an interview on TVC on Thursday as discussions surrounding the 2027 general elections continue to gain momentum.

His comments come amid growing political conversations and campaign projections from some potential presidential contenders who have expressed confidence in addressing Nigeria’s major challenges within one tenure in office.

According to Sowunmi, promises suggesting that a single four-year term is sufficient to completely solve the country’s longstanding economic, political, and social problems should be viewed with caution.

He argued that governing Nigeria involves dealing with deeply rooted issues that require time, continuity, and sustained policy implementation.

The PDP chieftain maintained that individuals who suggest that the country’s numerous challenges can be fully resolved within one term either underestimate the complexity of governance or fail to present practical strategies for achieving such goals.

Sowunmi also referenced the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan while discussing the realities of political leadership and tenure in Nigeria.

He noted that Jonathan completed the remaining part of the tenure left by the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua before subsequently serving his own elected term.

According to him, political debates surrounding Jonathan’s continued stay in office later contributed to tensions that affected the fortunes of the PDP.

Sowunmi further stated that political leaders often make ambitious promises without sufficiently explaining the specific policies and mechanisms through which they intend to deliver results.

As preparations gradually begin ahead of the 2027 elections, conversations around governance, leadership expectations, and long-term policy implementation continue to shape political discussions across the country.
