Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed why he developed admiration for veteran entertainer and activist Charly Boy despite initially disapproving of his unconventional appearance and lifestyle.

Obasanjo made the remarks while reflecting on his relationship with the controversial entertainer, whose real name is Charles Oputa, the son of late Supreme Court Justice Chukwudifu Oputa.

According to the former president, his first impression of Charly Boy was largely shaped by the entertainer’s eccentric dressing and rebellious public image, which sharply contrasted with the disciplined and polished personality of his father.

Obasanjo said he had long admired Justice Oputa, whom he described as one of the few Nigerians he genuinely respected and considered a close friend. However, seeing Charly Boy’s unconventional fashion sense and lifestyle initially made him sceptical about the entertainer.

“He was dressed jaga-jaga,” Obasanjo recalled while describing his early encounters with Charly Boy. He explained that he struggled to understand how the son of a respected jurist could embrace such an unconventional lifestyle.

The former president noted that his perception changed after a visit to Justice Oputa, during which he met the late jurist at Charly Boy’s residence. According to him, what stood out was not Charly Boy’s appearance but the exceptional care and devotion he showed to his father.

Obasanjo said he was deeply impressed by the entertainer’s commitment to his parents, stressing that Charly Boy’s care for his father exceeded what many outwardly respectable individuals might offer.

He explained that the experience made him realise that Charly Boy’s dramatic appearance, mannerisms, and controversial public persona were largely part of his entertainment identity and artistic expression.

The former president added that his admiration for Charly Boy grew stronger after observing the entertainer’s relationship with his mother, whom he described as a morally upright woman. He noted that Charly Boy also cared for her devotedly until her death and ensured she received a dignified burial.

Obasanjo further said the entertainer’s life taught him important lessons about individuality, tolerance, and parental acceptance. He praised Justice Oputa for allowing his son to pursue a path different from the family’s expectations, despite not fitting into the conventional image associated with the son of a Supreme Court justice.

Charly Boy, popularly known as “Area Fada,” has built a reputation over the decades as one of Nigeria’s most outspoken entertainers and social activists. Known for his punk-inspired fashion, political activism, and criticism of government policies, the veteran entertainer has remained a controversial but influential figure in Nigeria’s entertainment and civic space.

The unusual friendship between Obasanjo and Charly Boy has attracted public attention in recent years, especially given their contrasting public images and backgrounds. However, both men have repeatedly emphasised that their relationship is rooted in mutual respect and understanding.
