Former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has emerged as a potential challenger to FIFA President Gianni Infantino ahead of the world football governing body’s presidential election in 2027.

Senior figures within European football are reportedly encouraging Wenger, who has served as FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development since 2019, to consider contesting the presidency amid growing criticism of Infantino’s leadership.

However, Wenger has neither declared his candidacy nor publicly indicated that he intends to challenge Infantino, under whom he currently serves.

The discussions follow controversy surrounding FIFA’s abandoned proposal to sell commercial stakes in the World Cup to private investors through an initiative known as FIFA Forward Enterprise.

The proposal attracted opposition from football administrators across Europe, North America and Asia, with critics raising concerns about FIFA’s independence, commercial interests and governance.

Wenger distanced himself from the initiative, stating that he had not participated in its development and had learned about it through media reports.

The former Arsenal manager also supported the decision to withdraw the proposal, emphasising the importance of transparency, integrity and independence in football administration.

Despite the controversy, Infantino continues to enjoy significant support among FIFA member associations, particularly in Africa, South America and Oceania.

Reports indicate that all 54 African national football associations have backed his re-election following commitments to increase development funding.

Wenger, however, is regarded by some European football officials as a potential alternative because of his international reputation and experience in football development.

The 76-year-old Frenchman managed Arsenal for 22 years before leaving in 2018, having established himself as one of the most influential managers in English football.

Since joining FIFA, he has overseen football development initiatives, including youth academies and competitions across several countries.

His experience in European and Asian football, particularly his previous coaching career in Japan, is also considered an advantage by those supporting a possible presidential bid.

Nevertheless, questions remain over whether Wenger would be willing to challenge Infantino, who appointed him to his current FIFA position.

Some football officials believe his standing within the game could help attract support beyond Europe, while others question whether he has the political relationships required to secure sufficient backing from FIFA’s global membership.

Wenger has also faced criticism over some of his football reform proposals, including the introduction of a biennial World Cup and changes to the offside law.

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Ramon Vega has reportedly declared his intention to contest the presidency, while other prominent football administrators have indicated that they do not intend to run.

Under the reported election timetable, prospective candidates have until November 18, 2026, to declare their intentions and must secure nominations from at least five national football associations.

For now, Wenger’s possible candidacy remains speculative, with no formal announcement from the former Arsenal manager.

The coming weeks could determine whether Infantino faces a significant challenge or proceeds towards another term without a major opponent.
