WAEC APPOINTS NIGERIA’S AMOS DANGUT AS NEW REGISTRAR, CEO

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Nigerian educationist Dr Amos Josiah Dangut as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer for a five-year term.

Dangut, who previously served as Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office, assumed office on October 1, 2026, as the 14th Registrar of the Council. His tenure is expected to run until September 2031.

He succeeds Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia.

The appointment was ratified by WAEC’s governing Council during its 74th Annual Meeting held in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026.

The development was announced in a statement by the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC Headquarters in Accra, Demianus G. Ojijeogu.

Dangut headed WAEC’s Nigeria National Office from October 2023 to September 2026, overseeing technological and administrative reforms in examination management.

Born on October 2, 1967, Dangut obtained a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production in 1991 and a Master of Science in Animal Science in 1994. He later earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Science in 2017 and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning in 2020.

He began his educational career at St. Louis College, Jos, in 1994 and worked as a WAEC examiner before joining the Council in 1998.

During more than two decades at WAEC, Dangut served in several positions, including Assistant Registrar in the Test Development Division in Ogba, Lagos; Head of Examinations Security; Deputy Branch Controller in Uyo and Bauchi; Branch Controller in Yola; Controller of the Post-Examinations Department; and Zonal Coordinator in Ikeja.

He subsequently became Deputy Registrar and Head of the Nigeria National Office.

During his tenure as national office head, Dangut supervised several technology-driven initiatives, including Computer-Based WASSCE, question-paper serialisation and a Digital Electronic Marking System.

He also oversaw initiatives including the Digital Certificate Portal, WAEC E-Study Platform, Digital Records Archive and technology-based systems for examination logistics and examiner monitoring.

Dangut has served on the boards of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board and Grange Educational Foundation.

He has also represented WAEC at the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and the National Council on Education.

Dangut currently serves as the West African sub-region representative on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa.

He is a Fellow of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria and a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management.
