A fire outbreak has destroyed several shops and goods worth millions of naira at the popular Kugbo Furniture Market along the Abuja-Keffi Expressway.

The fire, which broke out on Friday, spread through sections of the market, destroying furniture, equipment and other valuable items belonging to traders.

An eyewitness, Mary Aniekan, said traders noticed the fire shortly after electricity was restored in the area, prompting people to raise the alarm and attempt to save their belongings.

“I was in my shop when we saw the fire and people running to safety, while others were trying to put the fire out but they could not,” she said.

Aniekan alleged that firefighters who responded to the incident ran out of water while efforts to contain the blaze were still underway.

As the fire spread, traders scrambled to remove furniture and other goods from affected shops, while emergency responders worked to prevent the flames from reaching adjoining sections of the market.

No deaths were reported as of the time of filing this report, but several traders suffered substantial losses following the destruction of their shops and merchandise.

The total value of property destroyed has yet to be officially determined.

The cause of the fire also remains under investigation. Although eyewitness accounts suggested that the outbreak followed an electrical spark shortly after power was restored, emergency authorities had yet to independently confirm the cause.

The incident left affected traders counting their losses, with some calling for assistance to help them recover their businesses and livelihoods.
