A Palestinian woman and three members of an NBC News team were injured after they were allegedly attacked by masked Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank on Saturday.
The incident occurred in the Palestinian town of Jalud, near Nablus, while the journalists were interviewing 51-year-old Aida Ahmed Abdullah and her family.
Abdullah told the team that Israeli settlers had forced her family from their home. The group was walking down a hill towards the house when a vehicle with Israeli licence plates reportedly approached them.
Video of the incident showed a grey car reversing up the hill before stopping. At least four masked men reportedly emerged from the vehicle carrying sticks and attacked Abdullah and the journalists with sticks and stones.
NBC News international correspondent Matt Bradley said he was struck twice on the arm and later received medical treatment at a nearby clinic.
Abdullah was also taken to a medical facility by the Red Crescent. Her injuries were described as non-life-threatening by the Israeli military and Israel Border Police. Her husband, Mahmoud Toubasi, said her condition had improved but that she remained in hospital on Saturday night.
Two other members of the NBC News team, a cameraman and a producer, were also injured and received medical treatment. Camera equipment and one of the crew’s vehicles were reportedly damaged during the attack.
Producer Lawahez Jabari said the attackers approached suddenly and assaulted members of the team with sticks. She also said she saw a gun, although it was not used.
The attack drew condemnation from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who described the violence in Jalud and nearby Qusra as “criminal acts” committed by a small group of rioters.
Netanyahu said such acts violate the law, harm Israel’s international standing and interfere with the military’s operations. He called on security forces to arrest those responsible and bring them to justice.
Israeli security forces said they had received reports of violent clashes involving masked Israeli settlers, including stone-throwing against Palestinians and others.
According to the security forces, officers arriving at the scene found dozens of rioters barricaded inside a Palestinian home while Palestinian residents were still inside. The forces said they removed the rioters, separated the groups and confiscated vehicles suspected of being used to reach the area.
The Israeli military and Border Police said they would continue operating in Jalud and Qusra to prevent further disturbances and restore order.
The incident comes amid a broader increase in Israeli settler violence in the West Bank. The Palestinian village of Qusra has reportedly faced repeated attacks by Israeli settlers in recent weeks.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Israeli forces or settlers killed 76 Palestinians in the West Bank between January 1 and July 24, while three Israelis were killed during the same period.
The West Bank, captured by Israel during the 1967 Middle East war, is home to about three million Palestinians and approximately 500,000 Israeli settlers.
