A United States Marine stationed in Okinawa has been arrested on suspicion of killing a 39-year-old Japanese woman at a hotel in Naha, renewing concerns over crimes involving American military personnel on the island.
Japanese police said the 20-year-old serviceman allegedly killed the woman on Saturday and took her wallet before leaving the hotel.
Investigators reportedly reviewed surveillance footage showing a foreign man entering a hotel room with the woman and later leaving with her belongings.

Police subsequently identified a man matching the description and asked him to accompany officers to a police station, where he was arrested. The suspect has reportedly denied the allegations.
US Ambassador to Japan George Glass expressed condolences to the victim’s family and said American authorities would cooperate fully with the investigation.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said her government had lodged a protest with the United States and called for full cooperation with investigators.
She also urged US authorities to strengthen discipline among military personnel and take measures aimed at preventing similar incidents.
The case has renewed attention on the large American military presence in Okinawa and longstanding concerns among residents over crimes and other incidents involving US personnel.
About 54,000 American military personnel are stationed in Japan, with Okinawa hosting a substantial share of US military facilities in the country.

Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said incidents involving American military personnel cause serious concern among residents and stressed the need for measures to prevent their recurrence.
Okinawa has witnessed repeated public protests over crimes involving US military personnel, particularly following serious cases involving residents.
Japanese authorities are continuing their investigation into the latest case, and the allegations against the arrested Marine have not been determined by a court.
