Akwa Ibom State has emerged as one of Nigeria’s top-performing states in governance, according to the 2025 Commonwealth Institute of Advanced and Professional Studies Governance Performance Index (CGPI).
The state secured a score of 64 per cent in the assessment, earning a place among the country’s top ten best-governed states based on key governance indicators.
The CGPI, developed by the Commonwealth Institute of Advanced and Professional Studies, provides a framework for measuring governance performance across Nigeria’s 36 states. The index evaluates states in areas such as e-governance, transparency, accountability, institutional effectiveness, and public service delivery.

Akwa Ibom’s ranking reflects its performance in public sector management, institutional reforms, service delivery, and citizen-focused governance initiatives.
Analysts say governance assessments such as the CGPI promote accountability and encourage healthy competition among states by highlighting policies and programmes that deliver measurable benefits to citizens.
The recognition also underscores the importance of sustained investments in education, agriculture, tourism, rural development, innovation, transparency, and efficient public institutions as key drivers of sustainable growth and improved living standards.
Observers note that Akwa Ibom’s inclusion among Nigeria’s leading states highlights growing emphasis on data-driven governance assessments in measuring progress and strengthening public sector performance.

The latest ranking adds to the state’s development achievements and reinforces efforts aimed at improving governance systems, strengthening institutions, and supporting long-term economic and social development.
