Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated after the US Central Command announced that American forces destroyed five Iranian oil tankers following attempted attacks on US Navy warships.
The strikes, carried out on September 8, came after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was accused by Washington of launching attacks targeting US naval vessels in the region. US officials said the action was taken in response to threats against American forces.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio vowed that Washington would continue military operations aimed at protecting American personnel and interests in the region.
Following the strikes, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards issued warnings targeting ships operating from Kuwaiti and Bahraini ports that host American personnel, increasing fears of further escalation in the Gulf region.
The US military said the destroyed vessels were part of an Iranian oil network that Washington claims supports Tehran’s military activities and regional operations.
The latest confrontation adds to a growing series of military exchanges between the two countries, with previous US strikes targeting Iranian oil carriers after missile attacks on American naval vessels.
Iran has responded with threats against US and allied interests in the region, including warnings involving maritime traffic and strategic waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy shipments.
The escalation has raised concerns over the impact on international shipping, regional security and global oil markets as both sides continue to exchange threats and military actions.
