The United States secured a place in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup after defeating Australia 2-0 on Friday, continuing its impressive start to the tournament despite the absence of star playmaker Christian Pulisic.
Pulisic was unavailable due to a calf injury, but Mauricio Pochettino’s side showed little sign of being affected as it recorded a second consecutive victory and maintained its unbeaten run in the competition.
The result marked a significant milestone for the U.S. men’s national team, which achieved back-to-back World Cup victories for the first time since 1930.
Forward Folarin Balogun played a central role in the win, providing attacking energy and creativity in place of the injured Pulisic. His relentless pressure on Australia’s defence helped create the opening goal in the early stages of the match.
Australia fell behind when defender Cameron Burgess inadvertently turned the ball into his own net while attempting to clear a dangerous delivery from Balogun. The own goal handed the Americans an early advantage and set the tone for the contest.
The United States continued to dominate possession and dictate play through a tactical approach designed by head coach Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentine manager deployed a two-striker system featuring Balogun and Ricardo Pepi, while encouraging fluid movement across midfield and attack.
The strategy paid off as the Americans consistently stretched Australia’s defence and created opportunities from both flanks.
The second goal arrived shortly before halftime through Alex Freeman, who scored with a well-placed header to double the lead. The 21-year-old’s goal was particularly significant, becoming the first headed World Cup goal for the United States since 2014.
Freeman’s rise has been remarkable. Having only recently established himself in the national team setup, the young attacker delivered one of the defining moments of the match on football’s biggest stage.
The victory also saw the United States make an unusual piece of tournament history. It became the first team to benefit from opposition own goals in consecutive World Cup matches after Paraguay and Australia both conceded similarly.
Speaking after the match, Balogun praised the team’s adaptability and collective approach.
“I want to create chances and be dangerous. Whether I score or force mistakes that help the team, the objective is always to contribute to victory,” he said.
Pochettino also commended his players for embracing different tactical demands and maintaining confidence despite the absence of one of the squad’s most influential players.
“I saw a team that truly believed in what it was doing. The players adapted well to different challenges and executed the game plan brilliantly,” the coach said.
The victory leaves the United States in a strong position in its group and potentially on course to finish top of the standings, depending on results elsewhere.
Attention will now turn to the Americans’ final group-stage fixture against Turkey, while uncertainty remains over whether Pulisic will recover in time to return to action.
For now, however, the U.S. camp can celebrate another convincing performance and a place in the knockout rounds of the World Cup.
