United States President, Donald Trump has announced a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, raising fresh hopes for a possible de-escalation of the prolonged conflict between the two countries.

Trump disclosed that the ceasefire will run from May 9 to May 11 and will include a suspension of military operations as well as a prisoner exchange involving 1,000 detainees from each side.
According to reports, the temporary truce coincides with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations commemorating the end of World War II. Trump described the development as a possible turning point in efforts to end the war, expressing optimism that ongoing negotiations were yielding progress.
“Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly and hard-fought war,” Trump reportedly stated in a social media post announcing the ceasefire.
The announcement comes amid continued hostilities and mutual accusations of ceasefire violations by both Moscow and Kyiv. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had earlier proposed separate temporary truces tied to Victory Day activities.
Despite the ceasefire declaration, reports indicate that fighting and drone attacks continued in some areas, with both countries accusing each other of violating earlier truce arrangements.
International observers say the latest development could provide an opportunity for renewed diplomatic engagement after several failed attempts to secure a lasting peace agreement since the war escalated in 2022.
The Russia-Ukraine conflict, now in its fourth year, has resulted in thousands of deaths, the displacement of millions of people, and widespread destruction across parts of Ukraine.
