Thousands of mourners gathered in Uganda on Saturday for the burial of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the former Tooro monarch who became the world’s youngest reigning king after ascending the throne at the age of three.
Oyo, who ruled the Tooro Kingdom for 31 years, died at the age of 34 while undergoing cancer treatment in the United States.
His funeral was held in Fort Portal, western Uganda, with family members, traditional leaders and government officials attending the ceremony.
Oyo’s sister, Princess Ruth Komuntale, described him as a cheerful person who often brought happiness to those around him.
His death, however, has triggered a dispute over who should succeed him.
A selection committee from the Babiito royal clan announced Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, a news anchor with Uganda Broadcasting Corporation, as the new king.
The decision has been challenged by Princess Komuntale, who accused some members of the royal establishment of acting against her and the Queen Mother.
She also presented a document she said was a 2022 will written by the late king, which reportedly indicated that his biological son should succeed him. The identity of the alleged son was not disclosed.
The claim has caused uncertainty within the Tooro royal establishment, with the alleged heir reportedly not included in the succession process.
President Yoweri Museveni, in a message delivered at the funeral, urged members of the kingdom to resolve the dispute peacefully and prioritise unity.
“Once the matter of the new king of the Batoro is settled, we will be happy to work with him,” Museveni said.
He called on the people of Tooro to use lawful and peaceful means to resolve the succession dispute.
The Babiito royal clan defended its decision, saying the selection was conducted in accordance with Tooro customs and traditions.
