President Bola Tinubu has ordered a full and transparent investigation into the deaths of suspected illegal miners detained by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, following enforcement operations around Lt. Gen. Mohammed Inuwa Wushishi Estate in Minna, Niger State.
The Presidency confirmed the directive on Friday, describing the deaths in government custody as a grave matter requiring urgent investigation and accountability.
Tinubu directed that the investigation should be comprehensive and unhindered, covering the circumstances surrounding the arrests, the condition of the detainees when they entered custody, conditions inside the detention facility, the number of people held there, medical attention provided and the events preceding the deaths.
The President stressed that suspected involvement in illegal mining did not remove the detainees’ rights to life, dignity and humane treatment.
He said the Federal Government would continue its campaign against illegal mining and other unlawful activities, but insisted that enforcement agencies must operate within the law and respect the fundamental rights of people in their custody.
Tinubu further directed that any official found, based on credible evidence, to have contributed to the deaths through action, abuse, or negligence should face prosecution in accordance with the law.
The President also clarified that the suspension of officers connected with the incident was an administrative measure and should not replace the determination of criminal responsibility where evidence warrants prosecution.
He directed the Ministry of Interior and NSCDC leadership to cooperate fully with investigators and ensure that no officer interferes with efforts to establish what happened.
The presidential intervention comes as investigations continue into the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in NSCDC custody, with medical and forensic examinations expected to help establish the cause.
Tinubu extended condolences to the families of the deceased and appealed for calm, assuring affected families and communities that the Federal Government would pursue the facts and take appropriate action based on credible evidence.
