President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a final six-month tenure extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, to enable him to consolidate ongoing reforms and ensure a smooth leadership transition within the service.
The extension was announced in a statement issued on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Under the new arrangement, Adeniyi’s tenure, which was due to expire on August 1, 2026, will now run until February 2027.
According to the Presidency, the extension is intended to allow the Customs chief to complete key initiatives, particularly the implementation of the National Single Window project, a flagship trade facilitation programme aimed at improving efficiency in Nigeria’s import and export processes.

The statement noted that the extension would also provide adequate time for an orderly succession process within the Nigeria Customs Service.
“During the transition period, Adeniyi, working with the Nigeria Customs Service Board, will ensure the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and the compulsory retirement of officers who have attained 60 years of age or have served 35 years,” the statement said.
Adeniyi was appointed Comptroller-General of Customs by President Tinubu in June 2023 after serving in various leadership capacities within the service.
A graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University, he joined the Nigeria Customs Service in the late 1980s and steadily rose through the ranks.
His career progression saw him become Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023, before he was appointed Customs boss later that year.

Since assuming office, Adeniyi has overseen several reforms aimed at enhancing revenue generation, modernising customs operations and strengthening trade facilitation.
