President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on members of the judiciary to ensure the speedy and impartial dispensation of justice, warning that delays and inefficiencies in the legal system could undermine public confidence and democratic stability.
The President made the call on Monday while commissioning the newly constructed Court of Appeal, Abuja Division Building Complex in Dakibiyu, Abuja. He was represented at the event by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Addressing judicial officers, President Tinubu urged judges to uphold fairness and equality before the law, regardless of a litigant’s social status, ethnic background, or financial standing.
“Let justice be swift. Let it be fair. Let it be blind to status, tribe, or purse. Let the common man feel that this Court is truly his last hope,” the President stated.

He noted that the new court complex aligns with his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly efforts aimed at strengthening governance, enhancing the rule of law, and improving judicial infrastructure across the country.
President Tinubu expressed concern that the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal had operated for years from inadequate facilities, stressing that a nation committed to justice must provide a conducive environment for judicial officers to perform their duties effectively.
Commending the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for the timely execution of the project, the President praised his commitment to implementing the administration’s judicial reform agenda.
According to him, the minister delivered the project within the stipulated timeframe without cost variations, describing the accomplishment as evidence of effective governance and accountability.
The President said the world-class facility, which comprises two large courtrooms and eight smaller courtrooms, would enhance the speed of adjudication, improve access to justice, reduce case backlogs, and help decongest correctional centres.
He reiterated that the Renewed Hope Agenda extends beyond political rhetoric and is focused on rebuilding institutions and improving service delivery across key sectors, including justice, health, education, power, and infrastructure.
President Tinubu also lauded ongoing efforts by the FCT Administration to strengthen the justice sector through the construction of additional court facilities, provision of official residences for judicial officers, digitisation of judicial processes, and support for legal education.
Acknowledging the critical role of judges in sustaining democracy, he noted that judicial officers continue to handle complex and sensitive matters, including election petitions and constitutional disputes, often under intense pressure.
“The eyes of Nigeria are on you. You deserve an environment that matches the weight of your responsibility. This complex is not a favour. It is your right,” he said.
Earlier, the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, described the project as a major milestone in the administration of justice.
She recalled that the Abuja Division previously operated with only two courtrooms, a situation that hindered the timely resolution of cases.
Justice Dongban-Mensem expressed optimism that the new facility would significantly improve judicial efficiency and enhance the delivery of justice.
She thanked President Tinubu, Vice President Shettima, and the FCT Minister for prioritising the judiciary and recognising its role in promoting national stability and democratic governance.
In his remarks, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike revealed that President Tinubu approved the construction of the Court of Appeal complex and residential accommodation for judges after being briefed on the poor condition of existing facilities.
He added that similar interventions have been approved for the Federal High Court, National Industrial Court, and the Code of Conduct Tribunal within the Federal Capital Territory.
Wike stressed that judicial independence can only thrive when judges are provided with adequate working conditions and suitable accommodation.

Also speaking, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), described the project as a fitting gift to the judiciary as it marks its 50th anniversary.
He commended President Tinubu for what he described as unprecedented support for the judiciary, noting that the administration has continued to make significant investments in the sector.
The Minister of State for the FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure, said the project demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring that the justice system serves Nigerians more efficiently and effectively.
