Three people have been killed and four others injured following a shooting at the Bite of Seattle food festival in Seattle, Washington, on Sunday night.

Police said the incident was the result of a shootout between two men at Seattle Center, where the annual festival was taking place.

Assistant Seattle Police Chief Tyrone Davis said one suspect surrendered after being confronted by officers, while a second suspect fled the scene and remains at large.

According to police, seven people were shot. Two victims died at the scene, while a third later died in hospital. The injured, including a toddler, were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds, and authorities said they had been stabilised.

Police recovered two firearms from the scene and said officers did not fire their weapons during the incident.

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson described the shooting as a “horrific act of violence” and expressed condolences to the victims and their families. She also commended emergency responders, event staff and bystanders for assisting people to safety.

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) said its agents are assisting Seattle police with the investigation.

Witnesses described scenes of panic as festivalgoers fled after hearing gunshots. Some initially mistook the sounds for fireworks before realising a shooting was underway.

The Bite of Seattle, one of the city’s largest annual events, attracts more than 350,000 visitors over three days. Authorities said investigations are ongoing as efforts continue to capture the second suspect.
