Three people were killed and three others injured in a head-on collision involving a truck and a crane on the Sagamu-Benin Expressway in Ogun State on Wednesday.
The accident occurred around 5:00 a.m. near Babcock Junction in Ikenne Local Government Area, according to the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE).
TRACE spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the vehicles involved were a white Mercedes-Benz truck, with registration number LG 59 BLF, and an unregistered yellow crane.
He said preliminary investigations indicated that the crane was travelling against traffic at excessive speed when it collided with the oncoming truck.
Six people, comprising three males and three females, were involved in the crash.
Akinbiyi said two males and one female died at the scene, while three other male victims sustained varying degrees of injuries.
TRACE, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the police and another rescue team, identified as “Papa Oscar”, responded to the scene.
The injured victims were taken to Babcock University Teaching Hospital for treatment, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) morgue in Sagamu.
Traffic was diverted from Delabo Junction to the second carriageway to ease congestion as rescue teams worked to remove the damaged vehicles.
Akinbiyi urged motorists to obey traffic regulations and avoid driving against traffic, warning that such violations could have fatal consequences.
He commiserated with the families of the victims.
