The Ogun State Government has disputed Nollywood actor Kunle Afod’s allegations of delayed emergency response to a road accident at Saapade along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, insisting that an ambulance arrived within 10 minutes of receiving a report.

The Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to Governor Dapo Abiodun, Kayode Akinmade, made the clarification in a statement issued on Saturday.

According to Akinmade, a passerby reported the accident at the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) post in Ogere at 12:18 p.m., where a state ambulance was stationed.

He said ambulance personnel and FRSC officials arrived at the scene at 12:28 p.m., after navigating the expressway to access the opposite carriageway.

The government’s explanation followed a viral video shared by Afod on Friday, in which the actor expressed concern that accident victims had remained without emergency assistance for approximately 20 minutes after he encountered the crash.

Afod appealed to relevant agencies to intervene, saying several injured people required urgent medical attention.

However, the state government maintained that its Ogun State Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System responded promptly after receiving notification.

Akinmade said the state maintained six ambulance points between OPIC and Ogunmakin along the expressway.

He added that the government’s emergency call centre had not received a distress call concerning the incident.

According to the statement, personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency also participated in the response.

The victims were reportedly taken initially to Victory Hospital in Ogere, while those requiring more specialised treatment were transported to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu.

Separately, the traffic agency reported that 13 people sustained injuries when a Mazda bus crashed into a concrete barrier on Friday.

The government also accused Afod of allowing political considerations to influence his criticism, alleging that he had previously supported an opposition governorship candidate.

Those allegations concerning the actor’s motives have not been independently established.

The differing accounts have raised questions about the timing of the initial accident report and the arrival of emergency personnel.

Akinmade expressed sympathy with the victims and urged motorists to avoid speeding, dangerous overtaking and reckless driving.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to highway emergency services and advised residents to report emergencies through the state’s dedicated number, 08112000033.

The government said the national emergency number 112 was not yet operational in Ogun State.
