Coco Gauff’s rise in tennis has taken her from a teenage newcomer chasing major upsets to one of the sport’s leading figures, with the American star continuing her pursuit of another Grand Slam title at the US Open.
Just a few years ago, Gauff was the young player generating global attention with fearless performances against more experienced opponents. At 15, she announced herself on the biggest stages by defeating former world No. 1 Venus Williams at Wimbledon and becoming one of tennis’ most talked-about young talents.
Her breakthrough continued at the US Open, where she progressed from a teenage prospect into a Grand Slam champion. In 2023, at age 19, Gauff won her first major title in New York, becoming the youngest American woman to win the tournament since Serena Williams in 1999.
Now established among the world’s elite players, Gauff has continued to build on that success. At the 2026 US Open, the fourth-seeded American advanced to the quarter-finals after defeating fellow American Iva Jovic 6-1, 6-4, setting up a meeting with Mirra Andreeva.
Gauff has also spoken about the challenges of growing up in the spotlight, describing her early years on tour as difficult because of her young age. She said she now feels more comfortable competing alongside players closer to her age and sharing the pressures of professional tennis.
