Against early scepticism and a faltering start, a youthful, largely home-based Team Nigeria has delivered a stirring comeback at the World Athletics Relays in Botswana, turning criticism into commendation and securing a place among the sport’s rising forces.
This was contained in a release signed by the chairman of the Media Committee, Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Maxwell Kumoye
According to the statement, what initially appeared to be a disappointing outing evolved into a powerful narrative of resilience and collective resolve. Written off after an underwhelming opening day, the Nigerian squad regrouped with renewed determination, producing a series of performances that not only restored confidence but also earned them qualification for the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship scheduled for Budapest in September.
The team further underlined its resurgence by clinching additional qualification spots in the 4x100m, 4x400m mixed relay, and the women’s 4x100m events—an achievement that reflects both depth and growing cohesion within the squad.

At the centre of this turnaround were standout athletes Maria Thompson and Chidera Ezeakor, whose performances and perspectives captured the spirit of a team unwilling to be defined by early setbacks.
“Even though more of the team are home-based and some are not fully fit, we gave our best for the country,” Thompson said, highlighting the determination of a squad built largely on local talent and limited preparation time.
Her remarks underscore a broader reality: that Nigeria’s domestic athletics system, when backed with belief and opportunity, can produce athletes capable of competing at the highest level.
Following sharp criticism from analysts and stakeholders, the team adopted a reset mentality one that Thompson described as pivotal to their resurgence.
“We told ourselves after the first day that it was not too impressive and that mistakes are part of the sport. We pushed forward and made the country and ourselves proud,” she added.
That internal recalibration proved decisive. Nigeria’s young athletes returned to the track with renewed purpose, converting pressure into performance and silencing doubts with disciplined execution.
For Ezeakor, the achievement carried deeper meaning anchored in faith, teamwork, and perseverance.
“We give all the glory to God. He was truly with us. I also thank the coaching team for believing in us and pushing us beyond our limits,” he said.
He described the championship as more than a qualification pathway, but a vital platform for growth and exposure.
“This is more than just a qualification; it is a wonderful opportunity that gives us experience.”
His words reflect a team not only celebrating immediate success but also building toward a sustainable future in global athletics.

The performance in Gaborone signals more than a single competition milestone. It marks the emergence of a new generation of young, determined, and increasingly confident on the international stage.
From doubt to distinction, Team Nigeria’s campaign will stand as a defining chapter one where adversity became the catalyst for belief, and potential was transformed into proof.
