The Supreme Court of Nigeria has nullified the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, 2025, effectively invalidating the emergence of the Tanimu Turaki, SAN-led factional national executive of the party.

The disputed convention, which produced a factional leadership headed by former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki, had been mired in prolonged legal controversy following allegations of constitutional breaches and disregard for judicial orders.

The convention, organised by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, was previously halted by a Federal High Court, which ruled that the party failed to comply with due process requirements, including the resolution of outstanding disputes from state congresses.

The court further held that the exclusion of some aspirants from the process rendered the exercise defective.

Despite the restraining order, the convention proceeded in Ibadan, prompting fresh legal challenges. The Court of Appeal later upheld the Federal High Court’s decision, ruling that the exercise was conducted in violation of valid court orders and therefore lacked legal standing.

Dissatisfied with the concurrent judgments, the Turaki-led faction approached the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn the decisions and legitimise the convention and its outcomes.

However, in its final pronouncement, the apex court voided the Ibadan convention, thereby affirming the rulings of the lower courts and bringing an end to the leadership tussle arising from the controversial exercise.
