The Nigerian Press Council, NPC, has called for closer collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to strengthen Nigeria’s fight against corruption and economic crimes.
Executive Secretary of the Council, Dr Dili Ezughah, made the call on Wednesday when he led the NPC management team on a courtesy visit to the EFCC headquarters.
Ezughah described the EFCC as a strategic national institution and commended its engagement with the media, stressing the importance of a free, responsible and ethical press in promoting accountability and good governance.
He proposed joint capacity-building for journalists, public enlightenment campaigns on economic crimes, structured information sharing, as well as collaborative research and advocacy on media ethics and accountability.
The NPC Executive Secretary said such collaboration would boost public confidence in the anti-corruption campaign while promoting responsible journalism.
Responding, the Secretary to the EFCC, Muhammad Hammajoda, who represented the Commission’s Executive Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, welcomed the initiative and assured the delegation that its proposals would be communicated to the Chairman.
Hammajoda described the media as a critical partner in the Commission’s anti-corruption efforts and pledged the EFCC’s readiness to collaborate with the Press Council.
He, however, urged the NPC to intensify its regulatory role, particularly amid the rapid and largely unregulated expansion of the new media space.
