Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has criticised members of the All Progressives Congress who contest party primaries, lose and subsequently choose to support President Bola Tinubu while working against other APC candidates.
Sule made the remarks during an interview on Tuesday while addressing the disagreement surrounding the Rainbow Coalition and the position recently taken by APC governors ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The governor said the Progressive Governors’ Forum was not seeking a confrontation with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, or politicians outside the APC who support Tinubu.
According to him, the governors were particularly concerned about APC members who remain within the party but refuse to support its candidates at state and local levels after losing internal contests.
Sule said such situations had occurred in Nasarawa, Benue and other states, where some politicians who failed to secure APC tickets subsequently worked against the party.
He said he had a “huge problem” with APC members adopting such a position.
“People will go, contest under APC, lose under APC, and now say, ‘Alright, we will support the President, but we will not support any other person.’ That’s the one I have a problem with,” Sule said.
The governor distinguished such cases from politicians belonging to other parties who choose to support Tinubu while continuing to campaign for candidates of their own parties.
Sule said Wike, who remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party while serving as FCT minister in the APC-led Federal Government, falls into a different category because he is not an APC member.
He said the position of the APC governors on the Rainbow Coalition had been misunderstood, explaining that their objective was not to fight the coalition.
According to Sule, the governors would prefer members of the coalition who share their political objectives to join the APC.
The disagreement over the Rainbow Coalition has generated debate within the ruling party after Wike maintained that politicians could support Tinubu’s re-election while backing candidates from other political parties in governorship and legislative elections.
APC governors, however, have maintained that while they welcome support for Tinubu from outside the party, their political structures will campaign for APC candidates across the different levels of the 2027 elections.
