African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has returned to Nigeria from the United States to resume campaign activities ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Sowore announced his return on Sunday, saying he was looking forward to reuniting with his family and continuing his political activities in Nigeria after spending more than 20 months abroad.
His return marks a new phase of his campaign as political parties and presidential candidates intensify engagements ahead of the election.
Sowore said he travelled to the United States following a period in which he faced arrests, detention, travel restrictions and the seizure of his international passport by Nigerian security agencies.
While in the US, he said he met Nigerians in the diaspora, supporters, activists and other stakeholders to discuss developments in Nigeria and his political agenda.
He also participated in a pro-Palestinian demonstration in New York during his stay in the United States.
Sowore said he continued advocating voting rights for Nigerians living abroad, maintaining that an AAC administration would pursue diaspora voting if elected in 2027.
He was expected to arrive at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos before proceeding to Abuja.
The AAC candidate said his return would allow him to intensify engagements with Nigerians across different parts of the country.
According to him, his campaign would engage workers, students, youths, women, farmers, traders, professionals and communities on issues contained in the AAC’s 2027 political programme.
Sowore has listed equal rights, justice, wages, education, healthcare, security, electricity and housing among issues his campaign intends to address.
He recently reiterated that he was firmly contesting the presidential election after former Cross River State Governor and Peoples Redemption Party presidential candidate Donald Duke expressed uncertainty over his candidacy.
Sowore pointed to the final list of presidential candidates published by the Independent National Electoral Commission as confirmation that he remained in the race.
He is also involved in a cybercrime case instituted by the Department of State Services. The DSS recently directed its counsel to seek an adjournment of the case until after the 2027 presidential election.
Sowore said his campaign would continue advocating what he describes as fundamental political, social and economic transformation in Nigeria.
The AAC candidate said he intends to take his campaign directly to communities across the country as the presidential election approaches.
Nigeria’s presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027.
