Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodriguez has called on the country to abandon a political path in which “extremism and intolerance” prevailed over peaceful and democratic coexistence, as she pledged an inclusive electoral process without specifying when elections would be held.
Speaking in her first address to the United Nations General Assembly as interim president, Rodriguez said Venezuela was undergoing what she described as an orderly, institutional and verifiable democratic transformation.
“Venezuela needs to abandon the path that led extremism and intolerance to impose themselves on peaceful and democratic coexistence,” Rodriguez said.
She also pledged that elections would take place and said political dialogue had begun with opposition sectors with the aim of creating equal conditions for participation.
“I want to say this very clearly. In Venezuela, there will be elections,” she said.
Rodriguez, however, gave no date for the vote, saying Venezuelans would determine the appropriate moment and that the country’s institutions would be prepared to guarantee an inclusive and transparent process.
