The Executive Secretary of the Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board, Chituru Adele, has praised the growing confidence in the state’s primary healthcare system following the first successful childbirth recorded at the newly revitalised Edeoha Primary Health Centre in Ahoada East Local Government Area.

The development comes after a baby boy was safely delivered at the facility in the early hours of Wednesday, marking what health officials described as a major milestone in efforts to strengthen rural healthcare delivery across Rivers State.

Speaking during a commissioning ceremony, Adele described the successful delivery as evidence that the state government’s investments in primary healthcare infrastructure are beginning to yield results.

According to him, the revitalised facility is fully equipped and adequately staffed to provide maternal and emergency healthcare services on a 24-hour basis.

He noted that the project aligns with the healthcare vision of Siminalayi Fubara, particularly in improving access to maternal and child healthcare services in rural communities.

Adele explained that the initiative aims to reduce the risks faced by expectant mothers who often travel long distances in search of medical care during labour.

He further highlighted the installation of round-the-clock solar-powered electricity at the facility, stating that an uninterrupted power supply would support safer nighttime and emergency medical procedures.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State government also recently commissioned a new antenatal care unit at the Rumuokrosi Primary Health Centre in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area as part of broader efforts to improve healthcare access.

Speaking at the event, Vincent Wachukwu commended Adele for what he described as notable progress within a short period in office.

Wachukwu explained that the new antenatal unit at Rumuokrosi was established to address rising patient numbers and reduce congestion at the facility, which he identified as one of the busiest primary healthcare centres in the state.

He also praised members of the Rumuokrosi community for safeguarding the facility against vandalism and assured residents that the government is working to address staffing shortages within the healthcare system.

The Rivers State government has continued to expand healthcare infrastructure across local communities as part of efforts to improve service delivery and strengthen maternal and child health outcomes.
