The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has announced its support for Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, in Saturday’s governorship election, following a Court of Appeal judgment recognising Adebayo Olugbenga Adedamola as the party’s candidate.

The PDP, in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, said the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja upheld the nomination of Adedamola as the party’s governorship candidate and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to include the PDP logo on the ballot for the August 15 election.

The party said the appellate court held that the PDP had conducted a valid primary election monitored by INEC and had forwarded the winner’s name to the Commission.

It said the court further ruled that the nomination access code was an administrative requirement that could not override the statutory obligation to submit the candidate’s name to INEC.

However, the PDP said the judgment came too close to the election to allow its candidate to effectively campaign, describing the development as a situation in which the grant of justice amounted to a denial of a fair opportunity to contest.

The party also accused INEC of bias and alleged that the Commission had frustrated its candidate’s participation in the election.

Against this backdrop, the PDP’s Interim National Working Committee said it had, after consultations with stakeholders, resolved to support the candidature of Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party.

The party described Adeleke as a former PDP member and directed its members in Osun State to vote for him during Saturday’s election.

The PDP also urged its members to protect their votes and ensure that the outcome of the election reflects the will of the electorate.
