The Rivers State Ministry of Education has announced plans to commence a statewide enforcement exercise aimed at shutting down unapproved private schools operating across the state.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Education, Dr Peters Nwagor, the exercise is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 15, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen quality assurance and ensure compliance in the education sector.

According to the statement, all private schools operating without registration or official approval from the Ministry of Education, as well as those failing to meet required academic and infrastructural standards, will be closed in line with the Rivers State Private Schools Law and other relevant regulations.

Nwagor said the initiative is designed to ensure that children in the state receive quality education in safe and conducive learning environments.

He also directed approved private schools with outstanding annual renewal fees to settle their arrears immediately, warning that only institutions with valid approval certificates and up-to-date payment records would be allowed to continue operations.

The commissioner reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enforcing standards in the education sector, adding that the move would help protect the welfare and future of pupils while improving private school administration across the state.

He advised school proprietors seeking clarification to visit the State Quality Assurance Services (SEQAS) office at Government Girls’ Secondary School, Rumuokwuta, Port Harcourt, or contact the Director of SEQAS, Dr Chinedu Wordu.
