The Federal Government of Nigeria has released the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) for academic staff in federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education for the period covering January to August 2026.
The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, disclosed this on Wednesday after inaugurating the Ministerial Committee on Accreditation.
CATA is a financial benefit designed to assist academic staff in acquiring essential materials and tools required for teaching, research and other academic responsibilities.
Mr Alausa said the payment was made in line with the provisions of the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
“The Office of the Minister of Education is happy to announce that the full CATA payment has now been released by the Federal Government from January to August 2026 to all universities, all polytechnics and colleges of education,” he said.
The minister added that the affected institutions had been notified to commence payment of the allowance to eligible academic staff.
He also disclosed that the payment of the corresponding allowance to non-academic staff was being processed and could be released within the next few weeks.
According to Mr Alausa, the release of the allowance reflects President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to improving the welfare of academic and non-academic personnel in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
“This is another indication of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to our academic and non-academic staff. President Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring that the quality and welfare of our staff are prioritised,” he said.
The minister said the administration’s education reforms also covered infrastructure development across tertiary institutions, as well as investments in basic and postgraduate education.
He said the government remained committed to improving the quality of education available to Nigerian children and ensuring that the country’s education system could compete with global standards.
“This is a president who believes so much in education. He has delivered beyond his promises to ensure that every single child in this country gets the highest quality of education comparable to anywhere in the world,” Mr Alausa said.
