The Nigeria Police Force has transferred the case file of the alleged extrajudicial killing of a Delta State youth to the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) for further legal review and possible prosecution.

The development follows widespread outrage over the killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, who was shot dead by a police officer in Effurun, Delta State, on April 26, 2026. The incident, captured in a viral video, has intensified concerns over police brutality and accountability in Nigeria.

According to police authorities, the officer involved Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman acted in violation of established operational guidelines, including Force Order 237, which regulates the use of firearms.

The Delta State Police Command had earlier confirmed that Ogidi was apprehended in connection with a parcel suspected to contain a firearm. However, despite being restrained and posing no immediate threat, the officer discharged his weapon, killing the suspect at close range.

In response to public backlash, the police arrested the officer and transferred him to Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary proceedings. The latest move to hand over the case to the AGF signals a transition from internal disciplinary measures to formal legal action.

Human rights organisations, including Amnesty International, have condemned the killing, describing it as a grave violation of the right to life and calling for a transparent and public trial. They stressed that lethal force should only be used as a last resort and urged authorities to ensure accountability.

Legal advocates have also weighed in, arguing that the incident represents a breakdown of due process and undermines constitutional protections, including the presumption of innocence.

The police, while expressing regret over the incident, reiterated their commitment to justice and zero tolerance for unlawful conduct within the force.
