A police sergeant, Johnson Okediji, has died after being knocked down by a vehicle during a stop-and-search operation in the Egbeda area of Lagos State.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, disclosed the incident while briefing journalists on the command’s activities for September.
According to Fatai, officers conducting a routine stop-and-search operation along Olugbede Street, Egbeda, signalled a Lexus ES 350 with registration number FKJ 223 KX to stop.
The commissioner said the driver, identified as 20-year-old Olumide Olusola, initially complied but allegedly accelerated as Okediji approached the vehicle.
Fatai alleged that the vehicle knocked down the officer and dragged him for several metres before the driver was eventually apprehended.
“The suspect was eventually chased and arrested. However, Sergeant Okediji sustained multiple fractures and severe head injuries during the incident,” the commissioner said.
Okediji was taken to a nearby hospital before being referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, according to police.
His remains were subsequently deposited at the Mainland Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while the vehicle involved was recovered.
Olusola, however, denied deliberately causing the officer’s death, attributing the incident to an alleged brake failure.
“I did not kill the policeman intentionally. It was due to the vehicle’s brake failure,” he said.
Police said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident were ongoing.
