The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for allegedly firing gunshots into the air during a confrontation with traders at a market in Kubwa, Abuja.
The suspect, identified as Onoja Samuel, is a Deputy Superintendent of Corps with the NSCDC.
Police operatives reportedly recovered a CZ pistol and 17 rounds of live 9mm ammunition from him following the incident.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Wednesday, October 28.
According to Adeh, the incident occurred on Sunday, October 25, at approximately 1:50 p.m., when the Kubwa Police Division received a distress call concerning an armed man allegedly firing shots at the market.
She explained that officers were immediately deployed to the location to assess the situation and prevent further escalation.
The responding police personnel subsequently disarmed the suspect and took him into custody.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Samuel allegedly visited the market with a pistol after receiving information that some traders had assaulted his wife.

An argument reportedly developed between the officer and the traders, during which he allegedly discharged his firearm several times into the air.
The police did not disclose whether anyone sustained injuries during the incident or whether the allegation concerning the suspect’s wife had been independently established.
Adeh confirmed that the recovered pistol and ammunition had been secured as exhibits while investigations continued.
She added that the suspect remained in police custody and would be charged before a competent court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Reacting to the development, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, urged personnel of other security agencies to exercise restraint when handling disputes involving civilians.
Sanusi also emphasised the need for proper coordination among security organisations operating within the Federal Capital Territory.
He advised officers conducting authorised operations to notify the police divisions responsible for their operational areas to prevent misunderstandings and avoidable confrontations.
According to the commissioner, effective communication and cooperation among security agencies are essential to maintaining public safety and preventing incidents that could threaten peace.

The command further encouraged residents to report emergencies and suspicious activities through its dedicated telephone lines, 08032003913 and 08061581938.
Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the shooting and determine the appropriate legal action.
The suspect remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
