The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the only viable opposition party in Nigeria, following the outcome of Saturday’s by-elections across the country.
Wike made the remarks on Monday while speaking at the commissioning of the Water Supply Network project in Karu Satellite Town, part of activities marking President Bola Tinubu’s third year in office.
He congratulated the All Progressives Congress (APC) on its performance in the by-elections, while also noting that the PDP continues to occupy its role as the country’s main opposition force.

According to him, Nigeria’s political system naturally operates with a ruling party and an opposition, stressing that the PDP remains the only party effectively challenging the APC at the national level.
“In every political system, there must be those in power and those in opposition,” Wike said. “Today, the reality is that the APC is the ruling party, while the PDP stands as the leading opposition.”
He added that opposition politics is not merely about criticism but about providing meaningful checks on government, insisting that the PDP remains the only party playing that role in the current political landscape.
