The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the emergence of Rt. Hon. Frederick Agbedi as Minority Leader of the House of Representatives as a major boost for the party and the opposition bloc in Nigeria.

In a statement on Friday, the party said Agbedi’s elevation reflects the confidence reposed in his leadership capacity, legislative experience, and commitment to democratic principles.

According to the PDP, the lawmaker’s emergence demonstrates the resolve of opposition members in the National Assembly to provide effective leadership, constructive engagement, and responsible representation in the legislature.

Agbedi, who represents Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency of Bayelsa State, was previously the Leader of the PDP Caucus in the House of Representatives before he was appointed Minority Leader.

The party noted that he has distinguished himself as a loyal member who has remained committed to the ideals and aspirations of the PDP, describing his emergence as a reward for years of service, discipline, and dedication.

The PDP stated that the development comes at a time when many Nigerians are looking to the opposition for accountability, effective representation, and the defence of democratic institutions.

It also linked Agbedi’s emergence to ongoing efforts to reposition and strengthen the party under the leadership of Barr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, Chairman of the Interim National Working Committee (INWC).

According to the statement, the Turaki-led leadership has prioritised party unity, internal democracy, constitutional order, and the rebuilding of party structures across the country.

The party said Agbedi’s appointment further reinforces confidence in the PDP’s relevance as Nigeria’s leading opposition party and signals growing support for its rebuilding efforts among elected representatives and stakeholders.

While congratulating the new Minority Leader, the PDP expressed confidence that his leadership would strengthen parliamentary oversight, deepen democratic accountability, and advance the cause of good governance in the country.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to constitutional democracy, the rule of law, national unity, and the pursuit of a more inclusive and prosperous Nigeria.

Agbedi’s emergence was announced by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, during plenary earlier this week.
