Peoples Democratic Party House of Assembly candidate for Abeokuta South Constituency II, Adeoye Adewale Adeniran, has accused the All Progressives Congress of spreading misinformation over the eligibility of Senator Iyabo Obasanjo to contest the 2027 Ogun Central Senatorial election.
Adeniran, in a statement issued in Abeokuta, described reports claiming that the Supreme Court had disqualified Obasanjo from the race as misleading and legally speculative.
His reaction followed the Supreme Court’s September 24 judgment in a case involving the Independent National Electoral Commission and the Zenith Labour Party over provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.
A seven-member panel of the Supreme Court led by Justice Adamu Jauro upheld INEC’s appeal and set aside an earlier Court of Appeal decision that had voided provisions relating to political party membership registers and candidate nominations. The apex court also awarded ₦2 million in costs against the ZLP.
Adeniran maintained that the judgment neither named Obasanjo nor contained an order specifically barring her from contesting the 2027 election.
“The attempt to present that judgment as an automatic disqualification of Senator Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo from the 2027 Ogun Central Senatorial election is factually unsupported, legally speculative and clearly designed to create confusion where none exists,” he said.
He argued that Obasanjo was not a party to the case and challenged those claiming she had been disqualified to identify the portion of the judgment containing such an order.
“It is therefore mischievous and intellectually dishonest to transform a judgment in a dispute between INEC and a political party into a purported judicial pronouncement against a particular candidate who was neither a party to the suit nor the subject of the judgment,” Adeniran said.
Obasanjo’s camp has separately rejected claims that the Supreme Court ruling automatically removed her from the Ogun Central contest, similarly arguing that the case concerned provisions of the Electoral Act rather than a specific judicial determination against her candidacy.
Adeniran further accused the APC of using the controversy for political purposes ahead of the 2027 elections.
That allegation represents his political position, and no evidence cited in his statement independently establishes that the APC officially originated or coordinated the reports concerning Obasanjo’s eligibility.
The PDP candidate said his party would instead focus its campaign in Ogun State on economic opportunities, infrastructure, education, healthcare, employment, security and support for businesses and vulnerable residents.
He maintained that the PDP would continue presenting its programmes to voters ahead of the 2027 general elections while urging the public to distinguish between the Supreme Court’s judgment and political interpretations of its implications.
