Governor Alex Otti has highlighted achievements in infrastructure, healthcare, education, security, and economic management as his administration marked its third anniversary in office.

In a statewide broadcast entitled “Dignity, Public Welfare and Accountability,” Otti said his government had laid a foundation for long-term development and restored public confidence in governance since assuming office on May 29, 2023.

The governor stated that the administration had completed more than 400 road projects covering over 800 kilometres, with an additional 82 roads spanning over 200 kilometres expected to be delivered in the coming months.

Among the completed projects he listed were the reconstruction of Port Harcourt Road in Aba, Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard in Umuahia, the 67-kilometre Umuahia-Uzuakoli-Abriba-Ohafia Road, and the new bridge over the Igu River near the historic Omenuko Bridge.

On healthcare, Otti said the state had recruited nearly 1,000 health professionals, including consultants and technicians, and allocated 15 per cent of its annual budget to the health sector.

According to him, 277 primary healthcare facilities have been retrofitted, and over 120 others have been made functional. Meanwhile, general hospitals in Obingwa, Okeikpe, Ikwuano, Arochukwu, and Ohafia have undergone upgrades.

The governor also highlighted ongoing work at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital and Amachara General Hospital, describing healthcare as a key pillar of his administration’s development agenda.

In education, Otti said the government had consistently allocated at least 20 per cent of its annual budget to the sector over the past three years.

He disclosed that the administration had recruited 5,394 teachers and was in the process of employing an additional 4,000 teachers to address increased enrolment in public schools.

The governor also pointed to infrastructure projects at Abia State University, Uturu, the Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, and the College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu, as evidence of investments in tertiary education.

On youth development, Otti said thousands of young people had been trained in digital skills, including software engineering, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity through programmes such as TechRise.

He added that the state had earmarked more than ₦300 million to support technology-driven enterprises.

The governor also highlighted investments in sports development, citing the recently concluded Abia SOCCERFEST tournament and other state-wide sporting competitions aimed at youth engagement and talent discovery.

On environmental management, Otti said the administration had evacuated nearly 3,000 truckloads of refuse shortly after taking office and had since established structured waste management systems through the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA).

The governor further listed achievements in transportation, including the commissioning of a bus terminal in Umuahia, deployment of electric buses, and construction of bus shelters and lay-bys across the state.

In the stated power sector, he isd the government was investing in both conventional and alternative projects to reconnect to electricity previously disconnected from the national grid.

Otti said the state had also digitised its land administration system and introduced a policy aimed at issuing Certificates of Occupancy within 30 days to improve transparency and attract investment.

On workers’ welfare, the governor said salaries and pensions were being paid as and when due, while a health insurance programme had been introduced for civil servants and their dependants.

He also highlighted programmes targeted at women, youth, persons with disabilities, and vulnerable groups, including housing support for indigent mothers and initiatives to combat sexual abuse.

Addressing security, Otti said the administration had strengthened collaboration with security agencies and community stakeholders, leading to improvements in safety across the state.

The governor also stressed fiscal discipline, claiming that the state had reduced its public debt stock by 60 per cent since 2023 while maintaining one of the highest levels of capital expenditure per capita in the country.

He thanked members of the executive, legislature, judiciary, local government councils, and residents of the state for supporting the administration’s development agenda.

While acknowledging that challenges remain, Otti said the government would continue to pursue policies focused on accountability, public welfare, and sustainable development.

“Indeed, we have come a long way, but the road ahead is still far. Our journey is only just beginning,” the governor said.
