Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has alleged that some opposition figures are exploiting Nigeria’s security challenges to create negative perceptions about the country and undermine the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Akpabio made the remarks on Tuesday at the commissioning of the main carriageways of the Outer Southern Expressway (OSEX), linking Ring Road 1 Junction to Ring Road 2 Junction in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

He said critics of the administration have increasingly focused on insecurity because, according to him, they are unable to fault the government’s performance in key sectors of the economy.

“If they did not say that nothing is happening in Nigeria, how would they go for the election? They have to say that,” he said.

The Senate President cited ongoing economic reforms, the removal of fuel subsidy, and infrastructure development projects as evidence of progress under the current administration.

He also alleged that some individuals were deliberately encouraging actions capable of creating instability to distort public perception of the country’s security situation.

“When they realise they cannot talk about projects or performance, they resort to other tactics. They recruit people to cause mayhem and create the impression that Nigeria is not safe,” he said.

Akpabio urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and support security agencies in addressing criminal activities across the country, while commending the efforts of the armed forces.

“Our men and women in uniform have done tremendously well, though many people may not fully appreciate it,” he added.

He expressed confidence that Nigeria would overcome its security challenges and cautioned against allowing political differences to threaten national unity.

“Elections will come and go. Elections will never be our end; we will see the end of elections,” he said.
