Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has inaugurated the National Community Food Bank Programme for the South-East region in Anambra State as part of efforts to tackle food insecurity and support vulnerable communities.
Tinubu launched the initiative at the old Governor’s Lodge in Amawbia on Thursday, saying the programme was designed to provide food assistance and nutrition support to widows, elderly citizens, persons with disabilities, nursing mothers and children.
The food bank is part of the Renewed Hope Initiative, a federal government social welfare programme aimed at reducing poverty, strengthening food security and improving livelihoods at the grassroots level.
The First Lady said the initiative would deepen collaboration between the Federal Government and state governments to promote inclusive development and expand support for vulnerable Nigerians.
Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, and his wife, Dr Nonye Soludo, received Tinubu during the visit, which also included the commissioning of an Information and Communications Technology Centre at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko.
The ICT centre is expected to provide young people with skills in software development, data analysis and remote work opportunities.
Tinubu also announced that empowerment grants, vocational tools and agricultural inputs would be distributed to beneficiaries across Anambra’s 21 local government areas as part of the broader intervention programme.
