Nollywood actress Sola Sobowale has paid tribute to late veteran actor Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, describing him as a mentor who played a significant role in shaping her acting career.

Sobowale spoke at a Night of Tribute held in honour of Jacobs at the Glover Memorial Hall in Lagos.

Jacobs died on September 16, 2026, at the age of 84. His death was announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs.

Reflecting on the veteran actor’s influence on her career, Sobowale said much of the recognition she receives for her performances could be traced to the guidance and training she received from experienced professionals such as Jacobs.

“When people see Sola Sobowale, they say she is a fantastic actor, but somebody trained me, and Baba Olu Jacobs was that person who trained me,” she said.

Sobowale described Jacobs as a man of knowledge, wisdom and selflessness who regularly corrected and advised her as she developed her craft.

The actress, widely recognised for her portrayal of Toyin Tomato in the television series Super Story, recalled Jacobs’ distinctive approach to offering advice and said his guidance remained an important part of her professional journey.

Veteran actor Adebayo Salami, popularly known as Oga Bello, also paid tribute to Jacobs, describing him as a father figure and consummate professional.

Salami recalled working with Jacobs after approaching him in 1997 over his film project, Okunfa.

According to him, Jacobs reviewed the script and made suggestions that significantly improved the production.

“I must confess to you. That man thought of things that didn’t cross my mind,” Salami said.

He added that Jacobs demonstrated humility by personally visiting him to discuss the project after reviewing the script.

“He showed he was a father. He was a professional to the core,” Salami said.

Salami urged Jacobs’ children to continue preserving their father’s legacy and contributions to Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

Family members, friends and prominent figures in Nollywood gathered at the tribute ceremony to honour the late actor.

Among those present were Jide Kosoko, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Kate Henshaw, Afeez Oyetoro, popularly known as Saka, Norbert Young, Femi Adebayo and Funke Akindele.

The tributes highlighted Jacobs’ decades-long influence on Nigerian film and television, particularly his role in mentoring younger actors and contributing to the development of the industry.
